The Tree of Life - Gustav Kliimt
In his funny but sometimes profound novel, More Die of Heartbreak, which takes as one of its major themes the difficulties in relations between men and women, Saul Bellow writes:
"Their were two varieties of truth, one symbolized by the Tree of Knowledge, the other by the Tree of Life, one the truth of striving and the other the truth of receptivity. Knowledge divorced from life equals sickness."
I take this as saying something about how one must conduct business. It is not enough to know everything about the products one sells, one must also hold to the Tree of Life and the truth of receptivity.
I will speak about the quality of receptivity throughout this blog. It is the chief characteristic of the genus 'artist,' and a most valuable quality in all human transactions, economic or otherwise. It means, first of all, that I am open and receptive to 'the other,' that I can listen deeply to what the other is saying...directly and indirectly.
Of course, it means much more than that...and I will discuss this more fully in upcoming entries.
For now, I will start a category on the margin called The Tree of Life. All posts that seem to touch on this issue will be archived there.
Welcome to 'The Turning Radius." I hope you find value in it.
